Welcome to Primary 6!
Mrs McCardie and Mrs Gilbertson are very much looking forward to year ahead with primary 6. We hope for lots of learning, fun and challenges along the way. See below our term ahead letter.
Term Ahead: August – October Primary 6
Welcome back to school after what we hope was an enjoyable summer break. We hope that you all had a lovely holiday.
In the boxes below, we have provided details of what the children will be learning over this term and some useful information.
Literacy and English
In reading, we are learning a variety of skills using non-fiction texts. The skills will include skimming and scanning, looking for fact and opinion, identifying the main idea in a text, different genres and collecting information.
In writing, our focus will be on functional writing. Through our John Muir award activities, we will write instructions, a short biographical pamphlet and a newspaper article.
Grammar and punctuation will be revising the use of commas and connectives. We will also be looking at and using narrative and direct speech.
Spelling will concentrate on the patterns –ion, -ious and soft c words. Numeracy and Mathematics
Throughout the year we will be using Heinemann Active to support our numeracy and maths lessons.
In numeracy, we will be focusing on decimals and fractions – ordering, comparing, rounding, multiplying, and dividing.
In maths, we will be focusing on money and finance, looking at real life aspects of spending, budgeting and keeping track of your money. We will also start looking probability.
Learning Across the Curriculum
Our topic this term is ‘The John Muir Award’. It will look at various aspects across science and social studies, including discovering, exploring, conserving and sharing the life and works of John Muir and the impact it has had on society. The topic will conclude with a ‘Woodland Challenge Day’ where we will share all we have learned with the whole school community.
Health and Well-Being will focus on emotions and being able to recognise them in others and ourselves.
In RME, we will be studying the key beliefs of the 6 major world religions and comparing their similarities and differences.
Mrs McCardie will be teaching on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Mrs Gilbertson will be teaching Wednesday – Friday.
P.E: will take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with the PE specialist Mr Murray.
P.E kit will also be required on a Thursday for Rugby coaching.
*PUPILS MAY COME TO SCHOOL DRESSED IN PE KIT ON A WEDNESDAY WITH THE STRICT UNDERSTANDING THAT SCHOOL UNIFORM MUST BE BROUGHT TO CHANGE INTO AFTER THE LESSON.*
