P6

Welcome to Primary 6!

Mrs McCardie and Mrs Gilbertson are very much looking forward to year ahead with primary 6.  We hope for lots of learning, fun and challenges along the way.

Term 4

Term 4 has already proved to be a busy time for primary 6.  We have had a fantastic first 5 weeks with our student teacher, Miss O’Connor.  She has worked very well with the class and taught us some new things!  During her Philosophy lessons the pupils have been learning about reasoning and forming an opinion on judgments made.  From this they have been working together on forming an understanding that every opinion counts: there is no right or wrong answer!  The pupils have really engaged and enjoyed this block of work.

Project Neverland

We have had the pleasure, over the last 8 weeks, to particpate in an exciting project with the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh, based on their Christmas production of ‘Wendy and Peter’.

“Project Neverland is an innovative, interdisciplinary learning programme for children, which will engage them in a range of creative activities inspired by our Christmas production of Wendy and Peter Pan…. Participants will determine the main themes of the play, and develop their own performance (or ‘sharing’). In addition to this the students will have the opportunity to learn and experience the production elements of creating a show from set building, costume and prop making to make-up for the stage…”

We had our last session with our drama specialist, Sophie, today (29.11.18) and the children were able to give very mature and interesting feedback about their expereinces.  Many were able to talk about the new skills they had learned, the confidence they had gained and how they had found a new enjoyment in drama.

The final part of the project was very exciting.  On Monday 26th Novmeber we were invited to watch the Royal Lyceum Theatre’s production of ‘Wendy and Peter’.  All agreed it was a fantastic show and we very much enjoyed it!

Term Ahead: October – December
Dear Parent/Carer,
Welcome back to school after what we hope was an enjoyable October break. We hope that you all had a lovely holiday.
In the boxes below, we have provided details of what the children will be learning over this term and some useful information.
Literacy and English

In reading, we are learning a variety of skills through a novel study using the book Wonder. We are also participating in the First Ministers reading challenge and have dedicated personal choice reading time in class.

In writing, our focus will be on extended writing though stories. Our focus will be fairy tales to link in with our Project Neverland work. We will look at developing setting, character and plot before completing our final story.

Grammar and punctuation will be looking at the use of adverbs, thesaurus work to improve our vocabulary and similes and metaphors.

Spelling will concentrate on prefixes in-, im-, anti- and co-.

Numeracy and Mathematics

Throughout the year we will be using Heinemann Active and TeeJay to support our numeracy and maths lessons.

In numeracy, we will be continuing our work on decimals; multiplying, and dividing. We will also be learning about the order of operations.

In maths, we will be focusing on data handling; collecting, interpreting and displaying using surveys and a variety of graphs.
Learning Across the Curriculum

Our topic this term is linked to our artwork completed with Mrs Gillies based on WW1. As it is the one hundred year anniversary, we felt it was an important historical event that deserved our focus. We will then allow the children to choose an historical topic of their own to research and they will present their findings to the class.

Health and Well-Being will still focus on emotions and how they affect our behaviour. We will have a closer look at bullying and resilience. We will also discuss how positive relationships can help you in different situations.

In RME, we will be studying the key beliefs of the 6 major world religions through important festivals within each religion.
